Alum: Dr. Mike Freed

Michael C. Freed, Ph.D., EMT-B is a 2005 Alumnus of PERL.  Currently, he is a Clinical Research Psychologist in the Department of Defense Deployment Health Clinical Center at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD.  He holds appointments as a Research Assistant Professor, in the Department of Psychiatry, and Scientist, in the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress, both at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD.  

Dr. Freed's research interests are in the areas of health service utilization, program evaluation, disease state valuation, and treatment outcome with an emphasis on cost-effectiveness.  He is the director of STEPS UP, a 5-year Department of Defense funded ($14.7 million) multi-site randomized effectiveness trial of a primary care based systems-level intervention for the treatment of PTSD and depression.  He is also a co-investigator on other research projects, all designed to improve screening of and care for service members with PTSD and depression.  Dr. Freed has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters.

Clinically, Dr. Freed maintains a small private practice in Silver Spring, MD, where he treats individuals and couples for problems related to anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use disorders, and relationship difficulties.
